Work is causing men’s mental illness, a new survey suggests. A survey by mental health charity Mind revealed that one in three men with poor mental health said their illness was to blame at work, while one in seven said the problem lay outside of work. Only a third of men with mental health problems feel their work culture makes them feel comfortable talking about their issues. Mind surveyed 15,000 people across the UK and found that men were twice as likely as women to report mental illness at work. We’re not helping ourselves. Only 29% of men said they had taken time off work due to mental health issues, compared with 43% of women. Men are less likely to take action when problems arise, the survey found. While women are more likely to be diagnosed with common mental health issues such as depression or anxiety, 78% of those who committed suicide in 2013 were men.
