It turns out the breakfast of champions really does deserve its crown. New research has found that starting the day with a big meal can speed up weight loss across the board. According to research jointly conducted by health authorities in California and the Czech Republic, increasing breakfast intake can reduce body mass index, commonly known as BMI. A long-term survey monitored more than 5,000 participants and found that those who ate breakfast as their main meal every day lost significantly more weight if other meals were kept small. However, participants who regularly skipped breakfast and snacked throughout the day were more likely to gain weight – proving that breakfast really is the most important meal. Speaking about the study, study leader Dr. Hana Kahleová said the results confirm the old saying: “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper.” This is not to say that it is recommended to eat five more slices of bacon, but sticking to the good stuff – eggs, porridge, fruit, etc. – can go a long way in maintaining weight.
